Our client in Newton, Massachusetts had wood gutters that had rotted. The problem with the wood gutters is that they will rot and need to be replaced every few years if they are not properly treated with linseed oil. Unfortunately, very few people maintain their wood gutters.

A home with a metal or slate roof needs to have either wood or copper gutters that can be securely fastened to the house. These will withstand the snow much better and last longer.

For this client, we decided to replace the rotted wood gutters with new wood gutters, but line them with copper so that they are maintenance-free, while keeping the integrity of the architecture. 

We fabricated a copper lining for inside the gutter, extending it up to the roof and under the first two rows of slate. This gives the roof extra protection against the formation of ice dams and protects the fascia board. 

We repeated this process on three separate areas of the house. Going forward the only maintenance will be to clean out the gutters every year.

The old gutters were also leaking at the joints.  We discovered that they weren’t put together correctly. 

Finally, this house needed new trim and siding on the dormers. 

Once all of the repairs were done, our Newton client was happy and their house was leak-free!
